Defense Secretary Warns of Imminent Threat from China

He urged Indo-Pacific allies to increase investments in defense, as European partners have.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth spoke at the International Institute for Strategic Studies Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore over the weekend, where he told American allies that the threat China poses to the Indo-Pacific region is “real, and it could be imminent.”

“There’s no reason to sugarcoat it. The threat China poses is real, and it could be imminent,” Secretary Hegseth said. He added that any Chinese military move on Taiwan “would result in devastating consequences for the Indo-Pacific and the world.”

The defense secretary reinforced the commitment of the U.S. to regional security but urged U.S. allies to invest more in regional defense to better match the United States’ contributions to global defense spending, citing recent increases in spending made by European nations.

“It’s hard to believe, a little bit, after some trips to Europe, that I’m saying this, but thanks to President Trump, Asian allies should look to countries in Europe as a new found example,” Secretary Hegseth said.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Secretary Hegseth to be led by the Lord as he heads the Defense Department.
  • For wisdom President Trump as he fills the role of commander in chief of U.S. military.
